Governance and Leadership


The governance and leadership of Dignity Health is provided by our board of directors, executive leadership team, and sponsorship council. The board of directors is responsible for approving major decisions affecting our health care ministry, including long-range strategic plans, the allocation of capital, joint ventures, and major acquisitions and sales.

The executive leadership team is charged by the board of directors to provide leadership and organizational management in the areas of operations, mission integration, finance and support services, as well as leadership in the strategic direction of the organization.

The sponsorship council oversees and acts upon issues of catholic identity for our catholic-sponsored health facilities including mission integration, ministry leadership education and formation, and preservation of the sponsors' legacy.

Board of Directors

Andrew C Agwunobi MD MBA

Dr. Agwunobi is the CEO of UConn Health and Executive Vice President for Health Affairs. He previously served as the Director of the Berkeley Research Group's Hospital Performance Improvement Practice and has held several executive positions with hospitals and health systems in Georgia, California, and Washington.

Dr Kent Bradley MD MBA MPH

Dr. Bradley is the CEO and President for BTN Advisors. Previously, he served as Senior Vice President/Chief Medical Officer for Safeway Inc. He has held senior executive medical positions in public, private and international organizations.

Judy Carle RSM

Sister Judy is the Secretary of the Dignity Health Board of Directors and a member of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas West Midwest Community. She currently serves in the field of education at Mercy High School in San Francisco, following leadership positions with the Sisters of Mercy Burlingame Regional Community, the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas, and Mercy Housing.

Caretha Coleman

Ms. Coleman has significant early stage investment, organizational development, and operational experience. For the past 15 years, as a principal in Coleman Consulting in Los Altos Hills, CA, Ms. Coleman has focused her practice on working with start-ups and early stage ventures.

Lloyd H Dean

Mr. Dean is the President/CEO of Dignity Health. With over 20 years in health care operations and leadership experience, Mr. Dean is responsible for overall management, strategy and direction of Dignity Health's hospitals, ancillary services, home health care, and medical group foundations.

Mark DeMichele

Mr. DeMichele is the retired President and CEO of Arizona Public Service Co., an electric utility serving most of Arizona. Following his retirement he founded a real estate investment company with projects in Arizona and California and served as a director on several corporate boards. Also, he has served on numerous non-profit boards in Arizona and California; he currently resides in California.

Tessie Guillermo

Ms. Guillermo is the Chair of the Dignity Health Board of Directors and is the President and CEO for ZeroDivide, a foundation in San Francisco that invests in community enterprises that leverage technology to benefit people in low-income and other underserved communities.

Peter G Hanelt

Mr. Hanelt has served as CEO, COO, and CFO for numerous consumer goods companies with manufacturing, importing, wholesaling, and retailing operations. Mr. Hanelt has a proven international business record in achieving outstanding financial results in difficult turnaround and restructuring situations.

Jennie Chin Hansen MS RN FAAN

Ms. Hansen is Senior Strategic Advisor and former Chief Executive Officer, American Geriatrics Society (AGS), an organization of multidisciplinary health providers dedicated to the research, academic preparation, and practice of providers focused on the health care of older adults. She also served as the President of AARP.

Julie Hyer OP

Sister Julie is a member of the Adrian Dominican Sisters. She has served in leadership positions including General Councilor/Administrator/Treasurer of the Adrian Dominican Congregation, President and CEO of Dominican Hospital in Santa Cruz, CA, and President and CEO of Salud Para La Gente in Watsonville, CA. In addition she has served on numerous boards at the local, state, and national level.

Dr Kavita Patel MD MS

Dr. Patel is the Fellow and Managing Director of Delivery System Reform for The Brookings Institution. She has over ten years of health care leadership experience and clinical work in primary care with an emphasis on bridging research, innovation, policy, and advocacy. Dr. Patel also served as Senior Aide to Valerie Jarrett, Senior Advisor to President Barack Obama, and as Deputy Staff Director for Health for Senator Edward Kennedy.

Todd A Pierce

Mr. Pierce is the Chief Digital Officer of The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Previously, he served as Executive Vice President/Corporate Technology for Salesforce.com, Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer for Genentech, and as Information Systems Director and Agency Chief Information Officer for the County of Santa Clara Social Services Agency.

Patrick S Steele

Mr. Steele is the Vice Chair of the Dignity Health Board of Directors and former Executive Vice President and CIO of Delta Dental of California, responsible for the organization's strategic direction and innovation. Prior to joining Delta Dental, he served for 35 years with Albertson's Inc., ultimately as Executive Vice President. For more than a decade, Mr. Steele was responsible for the Chief Information Officer role at Albertson's.

Lloyd H Dean

Mr. Dean is the President/CEO of Dignity Health. With over 20 years in health care operations and leadership experience, Mr. Dean is responsible for overall management, strategy and direction of Dignity Health's hospitals, ancillary services, home health care, and medical group foundations.

Charles P Francis

Mr. Francis is senior executive vice president/chief strategy officer for Dignity Health. With over 25 years of experience in health care strategy, business development, and consulting, he is responsible for the organization's strategic direction, market position, and public policy initiatives.

Rick Grossman

Mr. Grossman is the executive vice president and general counsel for Dignity Health. He has extensive expertise in strategic growth initiatives, physician integration, and diversified health services. He joined Dignity Health in 1997 as vice president and associate general counsel in the Pasadena office, where he managed the legal affairs for the organization's health care operations and services in Southern California.

Liz Keith

Ms. Keith is Executive Vice President, Sponsorship, and Mission Integration for Dignity Health. She is responsible for directing system-wide initiatives involving our religious sponsors and work to ensure that mission and values are integrated into all aspects of the organization.

Daniel Morissette

Mr. Morissette is Senior Executive Vice President/Chief Financial Officer for Dignity Health. With over 25 years of experience in health care, consulting and international business developments, he has oversight of financial affairs and other corporate operations activities for our nearly $15 billion integrated health care system.

Marvin OQuinn

Mr. O'Quinn is senior executive vice president and chief operating officer for Dignity Health and is responsible for operations in all of Dignity Health's service areas. He is also responsible for integrated process management and ambulatory operations.

Darryl Robinson

Mr. Robinson is Executive Vice President/Chief Human Resources Officer for Dignity Health. He has responsibility for the overall human resources strategy for the organization, including compensation and benefits, labor relations, and leadership development. Darryl is also responsible for the development and implementation of human resources programs and services designed to support the organization's mission, vision, and values.

Elizabeth Shih

Ms. Shih is executive vice president/chief administrative officer for Dignity Health. With over 28 years of experience in system integration and operations, she supports the president/CEO in governance relations and supports leadership in the ongoing operations of the organization.

Robert Wiebe MD MPH MBA

Dr. Wiebe is executive vice president/chief medical officer for Dignity Health. Dr. Weibe leads Dignity Health's organization-wide clinical and patient care efforts, including quality, patient safety, patient satisfaction, risk services, and physician leadership development, as well as Dignity Health's home health services.

Deanna Wise

Ms. Wise is executive vice president, chief information officer for Dignity Health. She is responsible for all of the organization's IT functions with particular focus on implementing Dignity Health's new EHR software standard, leading the effort to meet meaningful use standards, and building electronic bridges between our facilities and community physicians.

Sponsorship Council

Sheila Browne RSM

Sheila Browne, RSM is the Dignity Health Sponsorship Council Vice Chair and a member of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas West Midwest Community, previously serving as President of the Sisters of Mercy Auburn Regional Community. Sister Sheila also ministered as an elementary school teacher and administrator, and served on numerous boards and committees. Currently, she is the Director of Mission Leadership at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, CA.

Alice Mary Buckley CCVI

Alice Mary Buckley, CCVI is the Assistant Congregational Leader/General Councilor of the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word of Houston, TX. Prior to serving in leadership, she spent several years teaching and participating in school administration in Texas, Louisiana, and Utah. She has served on the St. Mary Medical Center Foundation in Long Beach, California.

Maureen McInerney OP

Maureen McInerney, OP is the Dignity Health Sponsorship Council Chair and is Prioress General of the Dominican Sisters of San Rafael. Prior to her election to a full-time role in congregational leadership, she served for seven years at Saint Mary's Regional Medical Center in Reno, NV as Vice President of Sponsorship and Mission.

Patricia Rayburn OSF

Patricia Rayburn, OSF is the Dignity Health Sponsorship Council Secretary. She also sits on the Dignity Health Mission Integrity Committee and Chairs the Retirement Plans Subcommittee. She recently served several years as the Provincial Minister for the Sisters of St. Francis of Penance and Christian Charity in Redwood City, CA. Prior to leadership roles with the Congregation, she ministered as an educator, pastoral associate, liturgist, and administrator.

Susan Snyder OP

Susan Snyder, OP is the Prioress General of the Dominican Sisters of St. Catherine of Siena. Sister Susan has served as a registered nurse and has been a nurse educator and community educator in the field of maternity care.
