Lloyd Dean Among 'Top 25' Minority Executives

San Francisco, CA - May 13, 2008 - Catholic Healthcare West (CHW), the nation's eighth largest hospital system, today announced that President/CEO Lloyd H. Dean has been recognized as one of the nation's top twenty-five minority healthcare executives by Modern Healthcare magazine.

"This recognition is a very personal honor for me," says Mr. Dean. "I grew up in a time when many doors to leadership were closed to minorities. I hope today that awards such as this serve as a source of inspiration to others that with perseverance, hard work and a deep belief in yourself, anything is possible."

This marks the second time Mr. Dean has received the recognition, which was instituted by Modern Healthcare in 2006 and is given biennially. Criteria for the nomination process include: successfully serving as a leader or managing an organization or company; having shown the ability or power to effect change in the healthcare industry; demonstrating a willingness to share expertise with others in the field; serving as a role model or mentor to other minority healthcare executives and assuming a leadership position in the industry outside of the candidate's own organization or company.

He is widely recognized as a leader who is deeply passionate about advocating for the poor and underserved and for his extensive leadership at the local, state and national levels, including his ongoing work towards healthcare reform. In February, Mr. Dean led the CHW Healthcare Leadership Summit, a think-tank discussion with twenty top executives from leading national healthcare organizations, on the question of how to ensure that compassion remains a fundamental element of any national health reform policy discussion.
