Experience our general surgery residency in Greater Phoenix's East Valley.
You are the next generation of surgeons. We don’t take that lightly. We are committed to developing talented leaders, clinicians, and researchers. And we train you in a culture of humankindness - developing healthy, happy, well-rounded surgeons with compassion for the communities that we serve.
Excellence in thriving training environments
In seeking to build an excellent residency program, we knew that its every component must be remarkable. After years of planning, our program is being built from the ground up - with our first residents starting in 2023. Pristine facilities include a new resident training center, lounge, skills lab and surgery simulation center. Technologies in our modern medical centers continue to be updated, as are our facilities overall. Chandler Regional Medical Center opened a new tower in 2021, and Mercy Gilbert Medical Center, in collaboration with Phoenix Children’s, is opening our Women’s and Children’s Pavilion in 2023. Our team includes faculty with unparalleled bedside and surgical skill. Our program leader has an impressive and impeccable leadership track record, lauded across a national medical community. Comprehensively, our general surgery residency program reflects the best of our community and our team.
Balance between work and life, health and wellness
Residencies are challenging. Your life will be busy as you develop and hone your surgical skills. Our program will strive to ensure access to activities and opportunities that provide a release from the stressors of your rigorous work-and-learn schedule.
Training on prioritization and time management will help you maximize work-life balance. You will find balance in a number of ways:
- Community. Our residency program is situated in an ideal metropolitan area that melds the cultures of the fifth-largest U.S. city with unmatched climate, natural beauty, and outdoor activities.
- Retreats. We offer retreats that will take you out of rotation mode to give your mind and body the rest it needs.
- Comfort. Our beautiful, new, fully-equipped resident lounge can simultaneously inspire productivity and relaxation. Fashioned more likie "home" than office, it provides a large-screen television, kitchen and meeting space.
Inclusion and diversity programs to honor your journey
Providing equitable, compassionate, and outcomes-oriented community health care is top priority in our general surgery residency program. Inclusion involves celebrating each person’s gifts and voice and respecting the dignity of all. Our program encourages you to provide care based on humankindness and as a resident, you should expect that same humankindness to be extended to you by faculty and peers. We champion a diverse and inclusive training environment enroute to becoming mentors and advocates for kindness and the delivery of equitable health care.
Humankindness in our training and community interactions
At Dignity Health, humankindness is more than a tagline. It’s the way we practice health care.
Hello humankindness, invites us all to recognize and relish the moving, joyful, and healing power of our own humanity. At its heart is the guiding belief that humanity holds the power to heal. Dozens of medical studies have confirmed that even simple acts of humanity can have a powerful, measurable effect on healing. Knowing this, we believe that our purpose is to unleash the healing power of humanity. We want to foster the ability in all of us to heal, nourish, protect, and support the body, mind, and spirit.
So as we nurture humankindness in the way you care for patients, you can be assured we will treat each other on the Dignity Health team – our residents included – with the same level of care and respect.
