According to the American Cancer Society Standards, monthly breast exams along with yearly mammograms are considered to be the biggest aid in diagnosing breast cancer. Women age 40 and older should get an annual screening mammogram even if they appear to show no breast symptoms. If you are at a higher risk (like a family history of breast cancer) you should speak with your doctor as you may need to start earlier screenings.

Ultrasound, sometimes known as sonography is a diagnostic procedure using high frequency sound waves to show images inside your body. The sound waves come from a small hand-held device - or transducer- which sends and receives these signals.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the breast or breast MRI- is a technique that captures multiple cross-sectional pictures of your breast. Breast MRI involves combining the images, using a computer to generate two and three dimensional pictures.

Needle wire localization is a procedure used to mark an area of abnormal breast tissue that was found on a mammogram and/or ultrasound. This area of abnormal breast tissue usually cannot be felt by you or your doctor.
