Cardiac CTA Training - Course Instructors


Carter Newton, M.D., F.A.C.C.

Dr. Carter NewtonDr. Newton is an Assistant Clinical Professor Cardiology and Radiology at the University Of Arizona School Of Medicine, Tucson, Ariz. He is a founding member of the Society of Computed Tomography, and is certified as a CTA Level III Instructor. He is American Board Certified in both Cardiology and Internal Medicine. Dr. Newton graduated from medical school and completed Internal Medicine and Cardiology fellowship training at UCLA.

Dr. Newton's focused expertise is in coronary artery and structural heart disease visualization. His practice emphasis is teaching radiologists and cardiologists medical imagery techniques for early recognition of heart disease utilizing CTA with comparisons to cardiac catheterization and echocardiography. He has trained over 1,400 physicians in CTA basics and advanced reading techniques at courses across the country since 2004. He operates a telecardiology reading and peer review service for numerous hospitals and medical groups in the U.S. He is regular faculty of the CTA Practicum at the ACC Heart House in Washington D.C. He lectures nationally and internationally on advanced cardiac imaging technologies.


Roger D. Bies, M.D., F.A.C.C.

Dr. Roger BiesDr. Bies is the Chief Medical Officer for Dignity Health East Valley Hospitals. He Is an interventional cardiologist, and Founder and past Director of the Cardiac CTA Program in Chandler, AZ. He has been active in Cardiac CTA  education for over 10 years. He has held Cardiovascular Program positions in both academic medicine and private practice, with over 40 publications in the clinical and basic sciences. Dr. Bies was an Assistant Professor of the Division of Cardiology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. He also served as Chairman of the Cardiovascular Department and Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory at Chandler Regional Medical Center.

Dr. Bies has served as Vice President for the Certification Board of Cardiovascular CT, 2011-2016 and is a Fellow of the Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography. He is certified by the Society as a Level III Instructor. He has co-authored a chapter in the textbook “The Complete Guide to Cardiac CT”.
