Nancy Reagan's Ties to Barrow Remembered
On the eve of the former First Lady's funeral, leaders at Barrow Neurological Institute are remembering Nancy Reagan's visit to the Phoenix institute, the role her father played in medicine at Barrow and her family's dedication to helping advance medical care. Mrs. Reagan's late stepfather, Dr. Loyal Davis, served as interim director of Barrow in the 1960's. In honor of her mother and stepfather, Mrs. Reagan dedicated a new research laboratory at the hospital in 1988. Barrow neurosurgeon Dr. Joseph Zabramski knew Mrs. Reagan well and is available for interviews with the media this week about the legacy she and her family left at Barrow. More Than Half of Unscreened Women Will Never Have Mammograms
In a survey commissioned by Dignity Health, more than half of women in the United States who have never had a mammogram say they do not plan on having the potentially life-saving test in the future. The study found that 53 percent of women over 40 will continue to reject the idea of a mammogram and more than a quarter of women who have not previously received an exam considered mammography the number one more fear-inducing appointment. D-Backs Player Returns to the Mound after Serious Brain Injury
Arizona Diamondbacks Pitcher Evan Marshall has returned to baseball just seven months after being struck by a line drive to the head and suffering a fractured skull and bleeding in his brain. Marshall spent months undergoing neuro-rehabilitation at Barrow and his recovery has been called remarkable. Marshall and his Barrow doctor, Dr. Christina Kwasnica, are available for interviews. It's a Match!
On Thursday, March 18, 44 nervous Creighton University Medical School students at St. Joseph's will open white envelopes inside a tension-filled auditorium and learn their future. Called Match Day, this day is among the most impactful and a rite of passage for the medical students who will learn at which U.S. residency program they will train for the next three to seven years. Barrow Partners with ASU School of Law to Create New Center of Innovation
A new center has been established at Barrow to allow neurosurgical residents to develop innovations in surgical tools and techniques for the field of neurosurgery. The center features a 3D printer for rapid prototyping and the residents work with law students at ASU Law's Lisa Foundation Patent Law Clinic to receive initial legal evaluations including provisional patent applications.
