Healthier Living Workshops

The Healthier Living Program at SJHMC has a focus on improving our communities overall health and wellness by providing the tools and knowledge to be better informed and more involved in their own care through various FREE interactive classes and workshops.

Cocinando con Salud en Balance

FREE cooking class series for individuals living with diabetes or any ongoing health condition. During each one hour class on every first and third Wednesday of each month, we offer simple preparation of meals appropriate for individuals living with diabetes. The goal of these classes is to increase our community’s knowledge of healthier food choices with healthier versions of familiar foods while also providing opportunities for participants to share and learn from one another.

Diabetes Empowerment Education Program (DEEP)

Diabetes Empowerment Education Program (DEEP) is a free 6-week workshop series for individuals with pre-diabetes, diabetes, or a family history of diabetes. During this workshop, we work together in small groups, during 1.5 hour sessions to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to prevent, manage, and reduce complications resulting from diabetes, such as kidney failure, amputation, vision loss, stroke, and heart failure.

*Held in various community settings throughout the year in English and Spanish.

Gentle Yoga

Gentle Yoga is a Yoga class practiced at a slower, gentler and less intense pace to promote relaxation, deep breathing and the release of mind-body tension through gentle poses, breathing and meditation. The goal of these classes is to reduce depressive symptoms amongst community members while helping them to improve their balance, stability, respiration, flexibility and joint health. These classes will also help participant’s lower high blood pressure, decrease anxiety and stress and boost mindfulness. The certified yoga instructor will support the healing of participants’ mind, body and spirit.

*Held at Dignity Health’s Cancer Institute located at 625 N. 6th St., Phoenix AZ 85004 every 2nd and 4th Wednesday of every month from 4:45pm to 6:00pm

Zumba

Zumba is a fitness class consisting of a mix of fun beats with low and high intensity dance moves designed to increase heart rate and boost cardio endurance to lower risk of heart disease, reduce blood pressure and boost cholesterol. Zumba is offered at no cost to the community every Friday for one hour and is led by a certified Zumba instructor. The goal of these classes is to increase engagement in physical activity to improve endurance and cardiovascular fitness and overall quality of life. Zumba classes are inclusive as there is no age bar or prerequisite skills nor minimum fitness levels required; as long as participants are moving to the beat of the music, they are participating in the exercise.

The Healthier Living programs are best suited for anyone with a chronic condition such as diabetes, arthritis, hypertension or high blood pressure, heart disease, or ANY other chronic health condition. Participating in these workshops or classes will not conflict with your existing medical care or treatment. We encourage and welcome all caregivers and family members to attend as well.
