When do I need a general surgeon?

A patient should seek an appointment with a general surgeon or obtain a referral if they experience persistent or severe, (nonemergent) abdominal pain, blood in their stool or vomit, difficulty swallowing, a lump in the abdomen, unexplained weight loss, fatigue, fever, nausea or vomiting, diarrhea or constipation, or jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes). These symptoms may indicate an underlying medical condition requiring surgical intervention. Early diagnosis and treatment by a general surgeon can significantly improve the chances of a successful recovery.

For emergent situations please call 911.
