Dominican Hospital Awarded Advanced Certification for Primary Stroke Centers
Re-certification demonstrates Dominican's commitment to effective, timely, and comprehensive stroke care
SANTA CRUZ, CA (April 15, 2019) – Dignity Health Dominican Hospital announced it has again earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for Advanced Certification for Primary Stroke Centers.
“With stroke, every second counts,” said Nanette Mickiewicz, MD, Dominican Hospital President. “We’re extremely proud to again be recognized for providing efficient, timely, and comprehensive stroke care to our community. Whether it’s immediate treatment in those critical first minutes, or recovery support in our state-of-the-art inpatient acute rehabilitation unit and outpatient rehabilitation center, Dominican provides a continuum of exceptional and compassionate care for our stroke patients.”
Established in 2003, Advanced Certification for Primary Stroke Centers is awarded for a two-year period to Joint Commission-accredited acute care hospitals. Dominican underwent a rigorous onsite review during which Joint Commission experts evaluated compliance with stroke-related standards and requirements, including program management, the delivery of clinical care, and performance improvement.
Dominican also recently received the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines®-Stroke Silver Plus Quality Achievement Award. This award recognizes Dominican’s commitment to providing the most appropriate diagnosis and treatment of stroke according to nationally recognized, evidence-based guidelines.
Stroke is the number four cause of death and a leading cause of adult disability in the United States, according to the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association. On average, someone suffers a stroke every 40 seconds, someone dies of a stroke every four minutes, and 795,000 people suffer a new or recurrent stroke each year. When it comes to spotting the signs of a stroke, remember B.E. F.A.S.T.:
- Balance: Is there a sudden loss of balance?
- Eyes: Is vision affected? Is there sudden double vision or loss of an area of vision?
- Face: Does one side of the face suddenly droop? Is there an uneven smile?
- Arms: Is one arm/leg weak or numb? Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?
- Speech: Is speech slurred? Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence. Is that sentence repeated correctly?
- Time: If the person shows any of these symptoms, call 911 or get to the hospital immediately.
