FAQS - Adult Functional Independence Test (AFIT)

Who will administer the test?
An Occupational or Physical Therapist who is a certified Functional Standards for Optimal Aging Expert (FSOAE) will administer the test. The hour-long test is one-on-one with the OT or PT.

What is included in the testing fee?
You will have an hour-long session with the therapist. In that hour, we will perform several tests and review a personalized exercise program.

How difficult are the tests?
People are often surprised by what they find easy and what they find difficult!

Some tests require sitting or standing, and some tests require walking and moving. We can take as many breaks that are needed. Your safety is our number one concern. We will stop if you experience any discomfort or pain. We have some tests that we can modify or skip if necessary.

Can I take the test if I use a walker or a wheelchair?
Absolutely! We will not have you complete any tests that are beyond your abilities or are unsafe.

Where will the test be administered?
Sequoia Hospital: Rehabilitation Department, 1st Floor
170 Alameda de las Pulgas, Redwood City, CA 94062
(650) 367-5517

The free parking structure is accessible from the Main Entrance off Whipple Avenue. There is also free valet parking if you prefer.

What do I do when I arrive at the hospital?
Please arrive 20 minutes before your scheduled time so that you can find our department and finish any needed paperwork prior to your AFIT.

If you are unfamiliar with Sequoia Hospital, there is a welcome desk at the main entrance where they will be happy to give you directions to our department. We are located on the 1st floor next to the Emergency Room (the hospital entrance is on the Ground Level). Email us the day before your test if you cannot walk the 1/2 block from the entrance to the therapy department and we can arrange wheelchair transport.

How do I prepare for the test?
Wear loose-fitting and comfortable exercise clothing that you can move around in. Closed toe shoes work best. Bring water and your completed AFIT consent form/health questionnaire.

Are the results confidential?
Yes! We do not share your results unless you give us permission to share with your primary care physician. We give you a copy of all your results but retain a copy on file if you ever decide to be re-tested.

How do I know if it’s safe for me to do the test?
We will review your medical history and assess your vital signs before we begin. Occasionally, we have someone who cannot be tested. Our primary goal is your health and safety.

I know someone else who would like to be tested. How can they get tested?
Anyone ages 50 and older can be tested. Please direct them to our website so they can schedule their own AFIT.

How can I provide feedback?
We hope you will take a few minutes after the test to complete our questionnaire as we implement this new tool to our community! Your answers will only be shared within our program for quality improvement.
