Our Commitment to Healthier Communities

At Dignity Health, we believe that true health extends beyond the walls of our hospitals. We're dedicated to supporting the well-being of our communities through meaningful programs and initiatives. Our efforts focus on:

  • Addressing critical health needs: We provide resources and support in areas such as emergency preparedness, mental health, diabetes management, respiratory care, HIV treatment and prevention, senior wellness, and maternal and family support.
  • Expanding access to care: Our hospitals offer financial assistance programs and contribute to the cost of essential government health programs, ensuring that vital services are available to those who need them most.
  • Investing in community partnerships: We collaborate with local organizations and nonprofits to address social factors that impact health, including food insecurity, housing, and youth development. In 2024, Dignity Health's California Region provided nine million dollars in grants to support these vital efforts as a part of CommonSpirit Health's billion-dollar effort nationwide.

Together, we're building healthier communities for everyone.

Champions of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

Our commitment to building healthier communities extends to fostering an inclusive environment where everyone feels welcome and respected. We believe that diversity, equity, and inclusion are essential for providing high-quality care to all.

Leaders in LGBTQ+ Healthcare Equality

We're proud that every Dignity Health hospital in California participated in the 2024 Healthcare Equality Index (HEI), a program of the Human Rights Campaign (HRC).  All our hospitals earned recognition as a "Leader” or “Top Performer” for providing welcoming and knowledgeable care for LGBTQ+ patients. This recognition reflects our dedication to equitable health care services for everyone who walks through our doors.

This commitment to inclusivity strengthens our mission to serve the diverse communities of California with compassion and respect.

Investing in the Future of Health Care

Dignity Health is dedicated not only to providing exceptional care today but also to shaping the future of health care. We're proud to offer a robust Graduate Medical Education (GME) program, training the next generation of skilled and compassionate physicians. More than 500 resident physicians are enrolled across more than a dozen residency and fellowship programs at our California hospitals. In addition to our GME program, we are committed to developing the next generation of nurses through our comprehensive Nursing Residency Program. This program provides new graduate nurses with the support and experience needed to excel in their careers and deliver high-quality patient care.

More in Common Alliance: Building a More Equitable Future

In partnership with the Morehouse School of Medicine, CommonSpirit Health has established the More in Common Alliance (MiCA). This ambitious 10-year, $100 million initiative will expand medical education and training opportunities, with a focus on increasing the number of culturally competent clinicians and researchers. MiCA is a testament to our commitment to creating a health care system that is both equitable and representative of the diverse communities we serve.

Empowering Nurses, Elevating Care: Our National Nurse Residency Program

Our commitment to the future of health care extends to supporting the growth and development of our nursing staff. Our Nurse Residency Program is designed to empower newly licensed registered nurses (RNs) as they transition into practice, fostering confidence and professional growth.

Program Highlights:

  • Reduced RN turnover: The program aims to significantly reduce RN turnover by providing comprehensive support and training, leading to greater staff stability and continuity of care.
  • Enhanced skills and confidence: The 12-month program equips new nurses with the skills and knowledge needed to excel in their roles, increasing job satisfaction and improving patient outcomes.
  • Investment in professional development: In FY24 alone, the California Region trained 486 preceptors and supported 289 nurse residents, demonstrating our dedication to cultivating a highly skilled and engaged nursing workforce.
  • Cost savings and improved retention: This program not only benefits our nurses but also strengthens our health care system by potentially saving millions in retention and hiring costs.

Through initiatives like the National Nurse Residency Program, Dignity Health is investing in the future of nursing and ensuring that our patients receive the highest quality care from confident and well-prepared professionals.
