Mark Twain Medical Center Heart Center: Providing Lifesaving Cardiac Care to Calaveras County

Posted in:

SAN ANDREAS, CA (February 24, 2025) - Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States, accounting for one in every three deaths each year, according to the American Heart Association. For many individuals who experience a cardiac event, such as a heart attack or cardiac stent placement, the journey to recovery can feel overwhelming. Adjusting to new medications, diet changes, and uncertainty about returning to daily activities can be daunting. However, there is hope – Cardiac Rehabilitation at Mark Twain Medical Center (MTMC).

The Mark Twain Heart Center provides a medically supervised Cardiac Rehabilitation program designed to help patients regain strength, reduce their risk of future heart events, and improve their overall quality of life. The program includes monitored exercise training, education, and stress management strategies to empower patients to take control of their heart health.

Cardiac Rehabilitation sessions last up to one hour, three days a week for 18 weeks. During these sessions, patients learn the appropriate exercise levels for their condition, how to monitor their blood pressure correctly, and when to consult their physician. The program also includes comprehensive medication education, dietary guidance from a registered dietitian, and stress management techniques.

To participate, patients must be referred by a physician and have a qualifying cardiac event such as a recent myocardial infarction (heart attack), cardiac stent placement, stable congestive heart failure, or cardiac valve replacement. Medicare and most insurance providers cover Cardiac Rehabilitation due to its proven effectiveness in reducing the risk of future heart complications.

Mark Twain Heart Center offers a range of services, including Cardiac Rehabilitation, Electrocardiograms (EKGs), Echocardiograms, Vascular studies, and soon, Cardiac Stress Testing. The dedicated team at the Heart Center brings extensive experience and a deep commitment to the local community.

“The work we do here at the Heart Center is truly life-changing. Our goal is to provide not only the best medical care but also the education and support our patients need to lead healthier lives,” said Debbie West, MSN, RN, Heart Center Supervisor.

With a mission to provide comprehensive and compassionate cardiac care, the Mark Twain Heart Center continues to expand its services to meet the growing needs of the community.
