Centers of Excellence

Mercy Hospitals of Bakersfield

Excellence: Elevated

Dignity Health Mercy Hospitals of Bakersfield have been recognized for our high quality and compassionate care we provide to members of our community. Mercy Hospital Downtown and Mercy Hospital Southwest are accredited by a number of organizations for the top quality care we provide to our patients, including the recent designation of a Center of Excellence.

Centers of Excellence

Mercy Hospitals of Bakersfield has recently achieved five Centers of Excellence accreditations in Minimally Invasive, Robotic, Hernia, and Colorectal Surgeries and Minimally Invasive Gynecology. These distinctions from Surgical Review Corporation (SRC) recognize the hospital's achievements in providing the highest quality of care as determined by an independent, external process of evaluation.

This achievement means Mercy Hospitals of Bakersfield has met nationally & internationally recognized standards. Not all hospitals and surgeons seek accreditation; not all that undergo the rigorous requirements and inspection process are granted accreditation.

Surgeons of Excellence

And, while our surgery programs themselves received top accolades, our experts who lead them have also received Surgeon of Excellence designations from SRC in those same areas:

Master Surgeon: Meet Dr. Lorenc Malellari

Lorenc Malellari, MD, colorectal surgeon and Mercy Hospitals’ Director of Robotic Surgery, received Master Surgeon designation from Surgical Review Corporation (SRC) for both colorectal surgery and robotic surgery. A Master Surgeon is a highly skilled and experienced surgeon who has gone through a rigorous accreditation process conducted by SRC. This prestigious distinction signifies Dr. Malellari’s commitment to providing the highest quality of care with a focus on patient safety and optimal outcomes.

Here's what it means to be an SRC Master Surgeon:

Expertise and Experience:
Master Surgeons have performed a significant number of surgeries in their specific field(s), demonstrating extensive experience and proficiency. They actively stay up-to-date with the latest advancements and clinical evidence in their specialties.

Rigorous Accreditation Process:
To become an SRC Master Surgeon, candidates undergo a thorough evaluation process that includes:

  • Reviewing surgical outcomes data and complication rates.
  • Assessing adherence to best practices and established guidelines.
  • Conducting on-site inspections of facilities and practice environments.
  • Evaluating the surgeon’s commitment to continuous improvement and patient safety.

Commitment to Excellence: Master Surgeons are dedicated to providing exceptional patient care, prioritizing safety, and achieving optimal outcomes for their patients. They actively participate in quality improvement initiatives and contribute to advancing the field of surgery.

There are also clear benefits to patients when choosing an SRC Master Surgeon, including:

  • A higher likelihood of experiencing positive surgical outcomes and reduced complication rates.
  • Access to a surgeon who is committed to patient safety and continuous improvement.
