The National Osteoporosis Foundation’s guidelines state that women over the age of 65, or younger post-menopausal women who have any of the Osteoporosis risk factors, including those with specific fractures should get a DEXA scan to measure their bone density. However, men are also at risk for Osteoporosis as they age - especially if they have some of the causes of Osteopenia or Osteoporosis, and should also get a DEXA scan.
Medicare pays for DEXA scan every two years. Patients must have a referral from their doctor, self referrals are not accepted.
According to the American Cancer Society Standards, self-monthly breast exams along with yearly mammograms are considered to be the biggest aid in diagnosing breast cancer. Women age 40 and older should get an annual screening mammogram even if they appear to show no breast symptoms. If you are at a higher risk (like a family history of breast cancer) you should speak with your doctor as you may need to start earlier screenings.
Mercy Medical Center's Imaging Services now has 3D mammography. Our advanced technologies result in greater accuracy - even for patients with dense breast tissue - which means fewer follow-up visits or false positives. We offer 3D mammography at the same price of a standard mammography screening.
For added convenience, we offer same day appointments, flexible times, and provide test results to your doctor within 24-hours of your appointment. We also offer Saturday appointments. To schedule an appointment for a 3D Mammography, call (209) 564-3161.
