One giant leap in joint surgery

Find relief from knee and hip pain with Mako™—a revolutionary and technologically-advanced treatment option for joint degeneration.

With Mako™ Robotic-Arm Assisted Surgery, you can get back on your feet sooner.

Thanks to a combination of scanning and analytics technologies, Mako allows orthopedic surgeons to perform precise, minimally invasive knee and hip replacements, allowing for a faster and less painful healing process. Patients who undergo Mako joint replacement surgeries also typically experience shorter hospital stays and fewer physical therapy sessions.

Performed by trained orthopedic surgeons using the Mako System software and a robotic arm tool, this minimally invasive surgery removes diseased bone and cartilage with extreme precision and implants a replacement designed to accurately fit a patient’s individual anatomy.

Trusted by hundreds of hospitals, Mako is a leading robotic surgical technology utilized by surgeons in 42 countries and in every state in the continental United States. More than one million Mako procedures have been performed since the technology was introduced. Dignity Health is proud to offer minimally invasive joint replacement through this advanced technology at Mercy Medical Center in Merced, CA.

Knee replacements

Mako offers two options for knee procedures: partial or total replacement. For partial replacements, one of the knee’s three compartments is replaced while the rest of the healthy tissue is left. This option is typically recommended for younger patients whose joint damage is confined to a singular area.

Total knee replacement is a common surgical procedure that involves replacing all three compartments of the knee joint. While traditional methods can be effective, the Mako System offers a minimally invasive approach with several potential benefits, including less bone and soft tissue damage, reduced pain, and a decreased need for inpatient physical therapy.

Hip replacements

Mako is also an option for hip replacement in patients with degenerative joint diseases such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and hip dysplasia. During a hip replacement, diseased or deteriorating cartilage between the pelvic bone and femur is removed and replaced with an implant.

Our three step process

  • Your personalized plan

Your journey to healthier joints with Mako begins with a CT scan and 3D virtual model of the damaged joint, which is loaded into the Mako software system and used to create a personalized, pre-surgery plan.

  • The surgical procedure

During the procedure, your orthopedic surgeon will guide the Mako robotic arm to the surgical site based on your pre-operative plan. The system allows the surgeon to adjust the plan as needed. As the bone is prepared for the implant, the Mako system guides the surgeon and helps prevent them from moving outside the boundaries outlined in your plan—allowing for more accurate implant placement and alignment.

  • Post-surgery care

After the procedure, your surgeon, along with a team of nurses and physical therapists, will work with you to set recovery goals, monitor your progress, and get you back on the move.
