Training Sites
Our main training site is St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Stockton, CA. St. Joseph’s Medical Center is the largest hospital in the Dignity Health network, with the busiest Emergency Department in San Joaquin County by volume. The Emergency Department sees a diverse mix of patients, including a large pediatric volume. Acuity is very high, with an admission rate of over 17.7% including a 13% ICU admission rate. The ED is an active STEMI and Stroke receiving center.
Residents will have a dedicated pediatric emergency medicine rotation at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland for one month in each of their 3 years of residency. UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland is one of only five American College of Surgeons Level I pediatric trauma centers in California, and is consistently ranked among the top pediatric hospitals in the nation.
Residents will have one dedicated month of trauma during each of their first two years at San Joaquin General Hospital located nearby Stockton in French Camp, CA. San Joaquin General is the licensed adult trauma center for San Joaquin County and residents will have exposure to treating a large volume of patients with both penetrating and blunt traumatic injuries. San Joaquin General has approximated 1,200 trauma activations per year.
In the PGY3 year our residents will rotate for 4 weeks at Kaiser Roseville Medical Center, in Roseville, California, in north-east Sacramento. On this rotation they will work with highly qualified, board -certified pediatric intensivists. This rotation offers an opportunity for unopposed learning and experience caring for pediatric critically ill patients. Residents still also have an opportunity for a NICU experience here at SJMC as an elective for additional pediatric critical care experience, in our 32 bed NICU, and under our 4 neonatologists.
