SJMC is the largest hospital in San Joaquin County, with a diverse patient population, including a sizeable pediatric volume. St. Joseph's Medical Center serves an urban community with nearby rural areas, each with significant underserved patient populations that create varied pathology and advanced levels of disease that challenge the residents' learning and level of care. There is administrative and academic support via faculty and clinical staff. St. Joseph's Medical Center has 355 licensed beds and necessary tertiary services for multiple residency programs. There is 24/7 off-site coverage by the inpatient faculty and 24/7 in-house backup coverage.
