Bone Density Screenings
Osteoporosis causes thinning and weakening of normal bone. The best way to test for osteoporosis is with a bone density test.
Bone Density Scanning
- Identifies decreases in bone density
- Determines the risk of broken bones (fractures)
- Confirms a diagnosis of osteoporosis
- Is used to monitor treatment of osteoporosis
What is Bone Density Testing?
Also called bone densitometry or dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA or DEXA), a bone density scan is a form of X-ray technology used to measure bone loss. The test is most often performed on the lower spine and hips. It can help diagnose osteoporosis and track treatment progress.
Who Needs to be Screened?
Bone density scans are typically recommended for
- Women in menopause
- People who have been on steroid treatments (for example asthma)
- Patients who have undergone chemotherapy
- Patients who have had pathologic treatments causing a decrease in bone density
