Diagnosis of seizures

Your doctor at Dignity Health will want to learn about your symptoms, details of your seizure(s), and medical history. Your doctor may also conduct the following tests to determine if the seizure is epileptic or nonepileptic:

Brain scans
Neurological exam
EEG (electroencephalography)

Treatment of seizures

An ER doctor will likely give you antiseizure medicine for a seizure lasting longer than five minutes or for multiple seizures.

For recurrent epileptic seizures, an experienced neurologist will treat you for epilepsy, including medications to prevent or reduce the frequency of seizures. In severe cases, surgery or electrical stimulation may be necessary. In many cases, treating the underlying cause of the seizures cures them.
