Alan shatzel, do, named Mercy Medical Group, inc. CEO
SACRAMENTO, CA - October 2, 2017 - Mercy Medical Group, Inc. announced today the appointment of Alan Shatzel, DO, as CEO. Dr. Shatzel will succeed Gregory Cooper, DPM, MBA who is retiring in September after serving as CEO for 15 years.
Prior to becoming CEO of Mercy Medical Group, Dr. Shatzel held numerous leadership positions at Mercy Medical Group and Dignity Health. He served as Medical Director of Neurology for Dignity Health Neurological Institute of Northern California, helping to build it into the Sacramento region’s leader in neurovascular care. He also established Dignity Health’s Telemedicine Network, which utilizes state-of-the-art technology to offer patients immediate access to life-saving medical care through two-way live video/audio and image sharing. Additionally, Dr. Shatzel was formerly President of the Board of Directors for Mercy Medical Group and Vice Chair for Mercy Foundation.

A graduate of Des Moines University, College of Osteopathic Medicine, Dr. Shatzel is board certified in neurology, sleep medicine, and holds subspecialty certification in clinical neurophysiology. He served as Chief Resident of Neurology at University of California, Davis Medical Center in Sacramento and completed a fellowship in clinical neurophysiology with emphasis in sleep diagnostics and clinical sleep disorders. He also earned his Masters of Business Administration at Sacramento State University. He joined Mercy Medical Group in 2004.

During Dr. Cooper’s tenure, Mercy Medical Group grew from a group of 90 providers and 16 specialties in 2002 to more than 400 providers and 32 specialties across 29 locations. Additionally, under his leadership, Mercy Medical Group was recognized repeatedly for its commitment to high quality, patient-centric care. Awards earned included the inaugural “Excellence in Healthcare” award from Integrated Healthcare Association (IHA) which measured clinical quality, patient experience, and total cost of care. Out of nearly 200 physician organizations, only 11 achieved this honor in 2014.
Dr. Cooper will assume an advisory role through December 2017. Gurvinder Shaheed, MD, replaces Dr. Shatzel as President of the Mercy Medical Group Board of Directors.
