Bariatric surgery
Bariatric surgery is a type of weight-loss surgery that can help individuals struggling with obesity achieve a healthier weight and reduce the risk of obesity-related health issues. The surgery works by altering the digestive system to limit the amount of food that can be eaten and absorbed by the body.
Types of Bariatric Surgery
There are several types of bariatric surgery, each with its own unique approach to weight loss. The most common types of bariatric surgery include:
Gastric Bypass: This type of surgery involves dividing the stomach into a small upper pouch and a larger lower pouch. The upper pouch is then connected directly to the small intestine, bypassing the rest of the stomach and the first part of the small intestine.
Sleeve Gastrectomy: This surgery involves removing a large portion of the stomach to create a smaller, banana-shaped stomach.
Adjustable Gastric Banding: This surgery involves placing a band around the upper portion of the stomach to create a small pouch. The band can be adjusted over time to control the amount of food that can be eaten.
