Led by Luis Castro, MD, the Sequoia Cardiovascular Services team is committed to delivering the highest-quality surgical care to each life they touch, and providing world-class outcomes with a hands-on “concierge” approach to patient care.
Dr. Castro practices exclusively at Sequoia Hospital in Redwood City, where he serves as the Director of Cardiac Surgery. His skills are complimented by an expert team of nurses and other clinical staff who have worked with him for more than two decades. They are leaders in complex cardiac procedures and minimally invasive heart valve surgeries. Dr. Castro and his team play an integral role in the success of the Sequoia Hospital Heart and Vascular Institute, which is now affiliated with the Cleveland Clinic Heart and Vascular Institute.

Meet our cardiovascular surgery team
Dr. Luis Castro received his medical degree at Stanford University School of Medicine, completing his internship and residency in general surgery at Stanford as well. Dr. Castro completed his cardiovascular surgery residency at the University of Southern California; he is board certified in surgery and thoracic surgery. Dr. Castro has been involved in or performed more than 5,000 cardiac operations; he has particular interest in mitral valve repair and aortic root reconstruction.
Dr. Castro has also enjoyed medical research – being published in numerous publications and presenting multiple times at scientific sessions. Dr. Castro is a member of the American College of Surgeons, the Western Thoracic Surgical Association and the Society of Thoracic Surgery. He has served as a consultant for Medtronic and St. Jude Medical, Inc. He is fluent in Spanish. Watch the YouTube video to hear Dr. Castro describe minimally invasive valve repair. Dr. Sarkeshik has published over 12 book chapters and over a dozen articles in various surgical journals. He enjoys writing and contributing to the betterment of the cardiothoracic surgical speciality as a whole with the aim of optimizing the care provided to his patients. His clinical interests include surgical therapy for acquired cardiac disease, ascending and aortic arch aneurysms, thoracic endovascular aortic repair, and transthoracic MAZE procedures for atrial fibrillation.
