How the flu shot works

Flu shots assist your body's natural ability to defend itself. Every year, physicians and scientists work to make the best flu vaccine possible. Typically, they start by finding three or four of the most common flu viruses for that particular season. Then, they expose the viruses to heat until they fall apart. The flu vaccine teaches your body's immune system how to recognize those three or four types of flu. If and when your immune system encounters that year's flu virus, it will know just what to do.

Why you should get the flu vaccine

Dr. Jose Arciniega, family medicine physician with Dignity Health Medical Network - Inland Empire, discusses why your whole family should have vaccines against the flu virus.

Additional safety precautions

  • Use your elbow to cover your mouth when you cough and sneeze

  • Wash hands thoroughly for 20-seconds and carry hand sanitizer with you to use frequently

  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth

  • Ensure you are maintaining a physical distance of 6ft in public spaces

  • Call your physician if you experience symptoms such as fever, chills, cough, headache, muscle and body aches, nausea, shortness of breath, or sore throat.
