Why joint surgery & replacements are performed
Your doctor may recommend joint surgery to treat infections, chronic joint pain, or disability from arthritis, overuse, or traumatic injury.
Other symptoms and reasons for joint surgery or replacement are:
- Joint pain and stiffness interfere with your daily activities.
- Joint pain is present even at rest.
- X-rays show severe joint damage or loss of cartilage and bone.
- The joint is deformed from arthritis or trauma.
- Other joint treatments, including anti-inflammatory medicines, physical therapy, and steroid injections, haven’t worked.
What to expect from joint surgery
Your joint procedure will be performed by an orthopedic surgeon at Dignity Health - St. Rose Dominican's San Martin or Siena Campus. The extent of your surgery will depend on the size of the incision and specific type of procedure.
Arthroscopic (or minimally invasive) surgery generally takes the least amount of time and uses small incisions. Other types of joint surgery may take longer and involve larger incisions. You may only need sedation for arthroscopy, but other joint surgeries may require general anesthesia.
Recovery after joint replacements
Minor joint surgeries such as arthroscopy are usually outpatient procedures. For other joint surgeries, you may need to spend a few days in the hospital and possibly stay in a rehabilitation center before you can return home safely. Physical and occupational therapy can help you regain strength and flexibility after joint surgery or replacement.
Our hip and knee replacement programs provide in-depth preparation, aggressive mobilization strategies, and group rehab to ensure exceptional patient care and rapid recovery.
