Hyperbaric Oxygen
Chronic wounds can cause frequent discomfort and pain. We are pleased to provide our patients the most advanced treatment and clinical options in chronic wound care. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is close to home - so there is no reason to suffer any longer.
How Does Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Treat Wounds?
Breathing 100 percent oxygen at increased atmospheric pressure is a painless, proven way to help the body heal. Hyperbaric chambers work by surrounding the patient with 100 percent oxygen at higher than normal atmospheric pressure in sessions, or dives, that last 90-minutes to two hours. Hyperbaric chambers increase oxygen levels in the blood in a process known as oxygenation.
What Can Hyperbaric Oxygen Treat?
Hyperbaric chambers have evolved to treat patients suffering from chronic wounds and the following issues:
- Compromised skin grafts and flaps
- Diabetic ulcers
- Soft tissue injury from radiation therapy
- Wounds that have not healed within 30 days
Hyperbaric Chambers
The hyperbaric chambers resemble a reclining bed encased in a clear acrylic shell nearly a yard in diameter. Patients can listen to music or watch movies on televisions mounted above the chamber while remaining in constant contact with those outside the chamber through an intercom and private handset.
Typically patients do not feel anything in the hyperbaric chamber except a slight pressure on the eardrum, similar to the feeling when a plane lands, as chamber air is compressed. The chamber emits high levels of oxygen, and this process, oxygenation, helps the body to heal its wounds faster.
