Mother’s Day in the NICU

New moms with babies in the NICU talk about Mother's Day blessings.

On Sunday, May 8, an estimated 85.4 million moms in the United States celebrated Mother’s Day, whether it was brunch, a card or some flowers. But some local moms spent the day in the neonatal intensive care units at Mercy San Juan Medical Center and Methodist Hospital, where they celebrated Mother’s Day with their tiny babies.

These moms have not been able to bring home their babies since birth, something that’s very difficult to cope with emotionally.

Shortly before Mother’s Day, television crews from KCRA 3 videotaped NICU babies with their mothers. KCRA 3 Reporter Rob Malcolm interviewed several new moms in the Mercy San Juan Medical Center NICU about what Mother’s Day meant to them, what it would be like to celebrate their first Mother’s Day in the NICU and how their babies have changed since birth.
