Salary and Benefits


These policies are subject to change at the discretion of the Mercy San Juan Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC) and as needed based on ACGME requirements and guidelines updates.

Annual Salary: approved annually by human resources and the graduate medical education committee

PGY Level Salary: Stipends will be reevaluated in the fall of each year. All Residents will be notified via annual Resident contracts.

Stipend (Range) Levels - effective July 1, 2025 – June 30, 2026
 




Health Insurance:
Dignity Health offers medical plans, premiums paid in full for residents and low cost for all enrolled dependents.  

Dental Insurance: Included with insurance for residents and family.

Vision Insurance: Included with insurance for residents and family.

Life/Accidental Death & Dismemberment Insurance: Dignity Health provides life/accidental death and dismemberment insurance for residents and pays the premium for 1x annual salary for life insurance and accidental death and dismemberment insurance for residents. Additional coverage levels are available with some cost to the resident. 

Disability Insurance: Dignity Health provides long-term disability insurance and will pay for the 60% of Base Pay option. 

403b Plan (optional): The 403b Plan enables you to set aside income before it's taxed and to defer taxes on the investment earnings. 403b contributions can be invested in Fidelity. After one year of service in which you have worked 1,000 hours, you are eligible for matching funds of $.5 for each $1 you contribute. You are 100% vested in matching contributions after 5 years of service during which you have worked 1,000 hours each year. 

Spousal & Dependent Life Insurance: Residents have the option to enroll at their own expense. 

Liability Insurance: Professional liability insurance is provided by Dignity Health to cover residents performing duties within the course and scope of their appointments. 

Vacation & Holiday Leave: Vacation leave is provided. Full-time residents receive four weeks of leave per year. 

ACGME Paid Leave: Residents/Fellows are eligible at the time of hire for approved medical, parental and/or caregiver leave(s) of absence of up to six weeks duration, at least once during their residency training program, with the ability to receive 100% salary.

Additional Benefits:

  2. Housing relocation stipend - $1,500 (onetime payment, initial year)
  3. PGY1-USMLE step 3 and/or COMLEX level 3 fee - reimbursement by MSJMC upon passing by end of PGY1 year.
  4. Post Graduate Training License (PTL) and associated fees
  5. Courses:  BLS, ACLS, FCCS courses
  6. California medical license - reimbursed
  7. DEA - reimbursed by MSJMC
  8. Board Application Review Course stipend during 3rd year
  9. Professional Association memberships - annually
  10. Access to Dignity Health online medical library resources (NEJM, UpToDate, etc)
  11. SonoSim and Butterfly Network Ultrasound Education
  12. Free parking
  13. Meal card while on duty - monthly stipend
  14. White coat (x2) and FIGS Scrubs sets
  15. Resident lounge and Wellness Room
  16. Call rooms
  17. EAP (Employee Assistance Program)-five visits per year for employee and/or spouse and dependents. Additional visits can be added on an individual basis.
  18. Local gym membership – paid for by MSJMC
