The Dignity Health Neurological Institute of Northern California—comprised of Mercy General Hospital, Mercy San Juan Medical Center, Mercy Hospital of Folsom, Methodist Hospital of Sacramento, Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital and Woodland Memorial Hospital—is led by a collaborative stroke intervention team, available 24/7, to treat the most complex cases of stroke from within the Greater Sacramento region and beyond.
Comprehensive Stroke Center
Dignity Health Neurological Institute’s leadership in stroke care was validated in 2014 when The Joint Commission certified Mercy San Juan Medical Center as the first Comprehensive Stroke Center north of the Bay Area. This continued leadership recognizes our ability to treat even the most complex stroke cases, providing 24/7 access to neurology, neurosurgery, neurointerventional radiology, and neurocritical care. This designation reflects a unique level of comprehensive care that includes:
- A dedicated neurocritical care unit devoted to complex stroke patients
- High volume neurointerventional radiology services for brain aneurysm, stroke, and other complex neurovascular diseases
- Advanced imaging capabilities including 3-Tesla MRI, biplane angiography, and CT perfusion available on site around the clock
- Dedicated vascular neurology service, including post-hospital care
- Treatment advances through participation in stroke research
Primary Stroke Centers
All Dignity Health hospitals in the Greater Sacramento region are designated Certified Stroke Centers, a distinction recognizing facilities that follow the best practices for stroke care. These facilities also provide integrated services in stroke diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation.

Dignity Health Neurological Institute of Northern California’s stroke program is unique in that it offers patients an extensive continuum of care, from exceptional Emergency Department treatment to in-house acute rehabilitation.
To provide advanced, collaborative and comprehensive care for patients who have experienced a stroke, the Stroke Intervention Team—available 24/7—includes:
- Hospital-based physicians with expertise in stroke neurology
- Registered nurses with expertise in stroke management and clinical trials
- Neuropsychologists
- Physical, speech and occupational therapists
- Dietitians
- Case managers and social workers
The team also relies on the excellent services of a dedicated TIA (Transient Ischemic Attack) clinic, Dignity Health pharmacy and radiology departments, clinical research staff, and advanced technology.
