If your doctor has recommended surgery, Dignity Health Sacramento offers advanced, minimally invasive options for conditions including:
- Colonic/rectal bleeding
- Bowel obstruction
- Diverticulitis
- Inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis)
- Irritable Bowel Disease
- Polyps
Our surgical oncologists can also perform minimally invasive colorectal surgery for treatment of cancer of the colon and rectum.
Robotic & Laparoscopic Surgical Specialists
The surgical teams at our Dignity Health hospitals include board-certified surgeons who have undergone extensive fellowship training on specific procedures and technology.
Our colorectal specialties include:
Robotic Colorectal Surgery
In traditional colorectal surgery, a large incision is made in the abdomen. During robotic colorectal surgery, only a few small incisions are made. Dignity Health specialists are the only robotic-trained surgeons in the region, using the da VinciĀ® Surgical System for a magnified, high-definition view of the abdominal cavity. Our team also uses specialized surgical instruments, so even the most complex and challenging procedure can be performed with extreme precision and control.
Laparoscopic Colectomy
Another type of minimally invasive colorectal surgery, laparoscopic colectomy is performed through several small incisions. Dignity Health surgeons use a laparoscope to view the inside of the abdomen and remove all or part of the colon.
Benefits of Minimally Invasive Colorectal Surgery
While all surgery results in some pain and discomfort, minimally invasive colorectal surgery means:
- Documented excellent clinical outcomes for cancer control
- Less risk of damaging nerves that control urinary and sexual function
- Fewer pulmonary complications
- Quicker return to bowel function
- Earlier return to your regular diet
- Shorter hospital stay
- Faster recovery
- Less pain, blood loss and scarring
- Less risk of infection and post-operative complications
