Robotic Hysterectomy
When you learn you are diagnosed with gynecological cancer, you may feel frightened or confused. A long, painful recovery after your surgery should not be one of the things you worry about. That’s why at Dignity Health, our specially trained Sacramento surgical centers offer minimally invasive surgery with the da Vinci® Surgical System for complex hysterectomies and other gynecologic procedures.
How Does Robotic Hysterectomy Differ from Traditional Surgery?
The most common types of gynecologic cancers are cervical, endometrial (uterine) and ovarian cancer. The specific type of cancer a woman has and how advanced it is will determine her available treatment options.
Women with early stage gynecologic cancer are often treated with hysterectomy. During this procedure, the doctor may also remove the ovaries, fallopian tubes and/or select lymph nodes.
For many years, the customary approach to hysterectomy has been open surgery, using a large incision for access to the uterus and surrounding anatomy. With open surgery, there can be significant pain, trauma, a long recovery process and threat to surrounding organs and nerves.
With robotic hysterectomy, Dignity Health's specially trained da Vinci surgeons use da Vinci to operate with greater precision and control. Instead of making one large abdominal incision, your surgeon will make four smaller ones, measuring about 1-2 centimeters each—minimizing the pain and risk associated with large incisions while increasing the likelihood of a fast recovery. Dignity Health specialists also work with miniature instruments and a camera to see a 3-D, magnified view of the pelvic area, allowing for greater accuracy and superior clinical outcomes.
