The highly skilled and compassionate team in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at California Hospital provides extra care and attention for premature or critically ill babies. When a child is in the NICU, it can be a difficult time for parents and families. However, you can feel reassured knowing your baby is in the best hands.

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at California Hospital Medical Center in Downtown Los Angeles is a 26-bed, fully equipped unit. Our Level III NICU features the most advanced technology, such as self-contained, versatile infant beds and sophisticated monitoring equipment. Our team of compassionate specialists are available 24/7 to care for ill, premature, and term infants born at the hospital from their birth to their discharge. Our staff also cares for the emotional and educational needs of the parents and families of newborns in our unit.

Level III NICU

Level III NICUs care for those babies who need the most advanced treatments. At California Hospital, we are able to care for critically ill newborns who are premature or who have:

  • Problems with breathing
  • Heart conditions
  • Birth defects

Our unit features self-contained Giraffe OmniBeds. These are versatile infant beds that provide emergency access and can convert to a protective, quiet environment, allowing your baby to grow and develop.

Visiting Your Infant

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is open to visitors 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We understand you are an important part of your baby’s healing process. Only two visitors are allowed at the patient’s bedside at a time due to space limitations. Healthy siblings who are five years and older may visit provided their immunizations are up‑to‑date and they have no signs of illness.

For privacy reasons, visitation is restricted during shift change from 6:30 to 7:30 a.m. and from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Please let the nursing staff in this department know if you have any special needs or concerns.
