When is Surgery Used for Bursitis Treatment?
Elbow bursitis surgery is used to treat bursitis with infection if removing fluid from the bursa or antibiotic treatment hasn’t helped. Surgery is rarely used for bursitis that is not due to an infection.
What to Expect During Elbow Surgery for Bursitis
Your care team will do everything we can to help you feel comfortable and ready for your surgery. Surgery for elbow bursitis with infection typically requires general anesthesia. After, you will likely need to spend the night in the hospital to receive IV (intravenous) antibiotics to help cure the infection. You may also need to take oral antibiotics after you go home.
Surgery for noninfectious bursitis is usually a short outpatient procedure with general anesthesia. You will go home after you’re awake and alert.
Elbow Bursitis Surgery Recovery at Dignity Health Southern California
After surgery, your doctor may use a surgical wrapping to protect your elbow during recovery. You may also need to wear a splint.
Because elbow bursitis surgery usually does not involve other joint structures, such as muscles or ligaments, recovery is generally shorter than other elbow surgeries. Most people return to full use of their elbow in about three to four weeks.
