Options for Childbirth at Dignity Health

At Dignity Health, we offer a holistic wellness approach to childbirth, including healing touch massage services and our doula program, in addition to our primary services.

Pain Relief

The most common type of pain relief during childbirth is an epidural, which is regional anesthesia. During this procedure, your provider injects the anesthetic into your spinal cord. This will get rid of any pain during a vaginal birth or C-section. You’ll be awake and alert after an epidural, so you can participate in the birth of your baby.

Natural Childbirth

If you have a natural childbirth, it means you go through labor and birth without having any pain medication or other types of medical interventions. You may find this option suitable if you want to avoid the side effects of medication to have the full childbirth experience. Your care team may help alleviate your pain through water therapy, massage, relaxation techniques, and controlled breathing.

C-Section

A cesarean section, or C-section, is a procedure in which your obstetrician makes an incision in your lower abdomen and the wall of your uterus to deliver your baby. Your doctor may determine that a C-section is a safer option for you, depending on you and your baby’s condition. This may especially be helpful for birthing complications and other unexpected problems.

VBAC

A vaginal birth after cesarean section, or VBAC, is sometimes necessary for women who’ve already delivered a baby through a C-section. This procedure may offer a shorter recovery with less risks.

Doula Support

We offer a doula program at Mercy General Hospital, Mercy Hospital of Folsom, Methodist Hospital of Sacramento and Woodland Memorial Hospital.
